Texas Homestead Exemptions:
Filling a homestead exemption on your home is an easy way to save money. Filing the exemption is free but the home must be your primary residence on the first day of the year and the exemption is not available for home owners who rent their properties to other tenants.

Filing a homestead exemption also limits the assessed value of your home from increasing more than 10% annually! Homestead exemptions have to be filed between January 1st and April 30th of each year and you must own and reside in the property as your primary residence on January 1st of that year. If you purchase your home after January 1st then you’ll have to wait until the new calendar year to file your homestead exemption.

Print and complete the form then mail it to:

Go to

Select Residential Homestead Exemption Application
Enter your address and follow the directions on the screen


How to file for your homestead exemption in Denton County
Go to
Select “Exemptions” on the left hand side of the page
Scroll down until you get to the “Downloads” section
Select Application for Residence Homestead Exemption
